5 Tips For Writing The Best SMS Marketing Content

1 November 2012

Here are some great tips to ensure that you are writing the best SMS marketing content possible for your company:

1. Check your grammar:

Always proofread your messages before you send them to ensure you are using the correct grammar as incorrect spelling can make your business appear unprofessional. Even if you’ve spent ages forming the perfect text message, a tiny grammatical mistake can instantly look clumsy and careless. Avoid text speak at all costs for the same reasons and try to limit the number of abbreviations you use. It can be tempting to try to cut down on characters using these methods but you have to think about the impression it will give your audience.

2. Think about your reason for writing:

Don’t just message your customers for the sake of it. Think carefully about why you are writing and what you want to convey to your audience. The messages you send need to be relevant and entice your customers to respond in the way you want them to. Make sure you spend time planning the content before you send it.

3. Keep reworking your SMS campaign:

As with any other marketing campaign, it is important to keep reworking and trying out different SMS messages in order to identify what approaches generate the best responses. Reusing the same messages will quickly lose its impact so try to vary your content to keep it fresh and original.

4. Make it personal:

Make your customers feel valued by sending them texts that have been personalised. Simply addressing your customers by name at the beginning of the message, or sending out content that is relevant to their demographic, is a good start. For example, you are less likely to get a response by sending your more mature female clientele discounted offers for dirt bike racing. Taking extra time and care to make these small changes will generate a more positive outcome.

5. Tell your customers how to respond:

Don’t forget to include a way for your customers to get in touch with you. There’s no point urging them to place an order if you do not supply any contact details within the SMS message. Another way to increase customer response is by adding specific keywords into the content such as ‘Text INFO for more information’. This clearly indicates to the recipient how they should go about responding to your message. It is also important to add in a way to opt out of receiving messages from your company as continuing to receive unwanted text messages is a waste of your time and money e.g. Text STOP to 81133.
